The Wellness Mentor Program dramatically increases lifestyle change success rates by improving self-change skills and enhancing peer support.
This health promotion program is now being used in worksites,
colleges, universities and community settings. Teaching mentoring is a cost-effective strategy for delivering personalized health promotion support throughout your
worksite, school or community.

A free journal
reprint from Worksite Health explains the philosophy and practice of the
Wellness Mentor Program.
The Wellness Mentor Training has eight learning objectives:
- Establishing Trust and Openness. Effective mentors need to be able to
maintain confidentiality and to quickly develop a relationship that
is based on mutual understanding.
- Defining the Wellness Mentor Concept. The term mentor can mean a lot of things.
Therefore, it is important to come up with definitions that express
the true vision of peer support and how the mentor role differs from
other more familiar roles such as friend, therapist or teacher.
- Setting Goals. Mentors learn how to establish priorities and to recognize progress
using a stage of change framework.
- Identifying Role Models. Mentors learn how to find appropriate role
models that will share their success experiences to inform and
inspire.
- Eliminating Barriers. Lack of time, money and confidence can
stand in the way of success. Mentors learn creative approaches
useful for overcoming barriers to change.
- Locating Supportive Environments. The right physical and social
environments can make lasting lifestyle change easier to accomplish.
Mentors learn how to identify supportive environments and to develop
strategies for gaining access to such supportive environments and
avoiding hostile settings.
- Working Through Relapse. The path to successful lifestyle change
is not always a straight line. Mentors learn how to help someone to
reassess goals and strategies to get back on track.
- Celebrating Success. Positive behavior should have its
rewards. Mentors learn how to develop fun and meaningful
celebrations throughout the lifestyle change process.

The Worksite Mentor Program
Employees receive a 4-hour training, a Wellness Mentor
Resource Guide
and a video about peer support.
Training participants receive a Wellness Mentor
Resource Guide and a video about peer support ($25 per
participant). The training includes small
group discussions. Participants are paired up during the
training in order to practice mentoring techniques. They are
also encouraged to establish a plan for follow-up mentoring
sessions. A mentor referral system is developed whereby employees can be assigned
mentors. While it is
advisable to train all employees, many businesses offer
training to a select group of volunteers, safety
coordinators or members of the health promotion steering
committee.
Wellness Mentor Facilitator Package includes program planning, delivery and
evaluation guides.
The train-the-trainer material features
a 10- part video with Joe Leutzinger, Ph.D. and Judd
Allen, Ph.D. presenting core training content. The cost of
the Wellness Mentor Facilitator Package is $250.
Although extensive train-the-trainer materials are available, it can be
useful to have an experienced trainer from the Human Resources Institute
facilitate the first training. The cost for such a trainer is $2,000
plus travel expenses.
The fee includes follow-up consultation and
tailoring of program materials. Call (802) 862-8855 to
schedule a trainer.
