Purpose
First made popular in Time and Esquire
magazines, this 5-minute health risk appraisal provides instant
feedback on how lifestyle influences life expectancy. The
simplicity of the Test of Your Lifetime brings health risks and lifestyle
strengths into focus in a way that is easily comprehensible. The brochure format
also suggests action steps for successful lifestyle change.
The PC and Internet format can be easily
tailored to refer people to websites or listings of health promotion programs
that specifically address their unique lifestyle risk profiles. One social comparisons version of Test of Your
Lifetime records employee answers in a database. This function makes it
possible to track health risks in groups. It also provides feedback to
participants about how their health practices compare with those of their peers.
Participants use this information to recognize cultural norms and to change
misperceptions about normal health practices. This feedback is great for health competitions,
establishing new cultural norms and assessing the impact of
wellness programs.
Test
of Your Lifetime Software Features Participants answer 21-25 questions while a score box tracks personal
life expectancy. A results page explains lifestyle strengths and
opportunities for improvement. The survey is completed on an anonymous
basis.
The software is built with Macromedia Flash
and can be accessed through web browsers such as versions 4.0 and
higher of Internet
Explorer or Netscape Navigator. The program can be uploaded
to your website or we can offer the service through a link to the
Healthyculture.com server. The Test of Your Lifetime can also be
delivered on a stand-alone computer. It is
also possible to modify the feedback provided for each health practice and to
link the feedback to external web pages.
Test
of Your Lifetime Software with Social Comparison and Database Features With the social comparison version of the
software, participants enter the Test of Your Lifetime using a group password.
Participants complete the test, receive personal feedback and then view a page
with comparisons between their own health practices and those of their peers.
Administrative functions make it possible to add and change passwords. It is
also possible to modify the feedback provided for each health practice and to
link the feedback to external web pages.
The social comparisons version
of the software links the questions to a Microsoft Access database. The database
can be accessed for further statistical evaluations and to compare group level
results over time. Use of the
social comparisons version of the software requires Microsoft Access on the host
computer. This resource is free when using Healthyculture.com's computer to host
your database.
Brochure
Version Features The
full-color brochure version was developed with the support of Wellness Councils
of America. The 25-item instrument can be completed in less than 5-minutes without assistance or medical tests. Those completing the instrument add and subtract years based on answers to each question. The result is a projected life expectancy based on historical averages.
Readers are advised to examine their answers to 17 (of the 25) questions that are related to lifestyle. They are then advised to set goals for eliminating health risks. The brochure discusses how cultural environments can trap people into unhealthy practices and offers "5 steps to a healthier culture and a healthier you."
The recommended steps are:
-
Set positive health goals
-
Keep track and tune in
-
Understand your culture
-
Reward yourself and have fun
-
Reach out to others
